Can a guilty conscience keep wounds from healing?
Fine arts major, Candace Parker, grew up with a mother who thinks image is everything, and her daughter’s perfection will never be good enough. About to graduate college and pursue her dreams of becoming a professional ballerina, Candace decides it’s time to let go and have a little fun. But fun is short-lived when a brutal attack leaves her completely shattered.
The memories that consume and torment Candace are starting to destroy her when she meets Ryan Campbell, a successful bar owner. He feels instantly connected and tries to show her that hope is worth fighting for. But is Ryan harboring his own demons? As walls slowly begin to chip away, the secrets that are held within start to become painful burdens.
At what point do secrets become lies?

MY REVIEW:
I have to start off by saying that this book really got to me. Emotionally and physically. It made me cry so many times I lost count. My stomach was in knots for a big part of the book. I was in the car driving with my family for our vacation to Orlando. Supposed to be a happy and exciting time and here I was sitting in the front passenger seat crying my eyes out. My boyfriend and kids think I'm nuts, but they weren't reading what I was reading. This book grabs you by your collar from the beginning and it doesn't let go until the end.
At the beginning of the book we meet Candace and her very best friend, Jase. Jase is the only person Candace trusts. When Candace is attacked the person she calls is Jase and only he knows what happened to her. Jase is the ultimate best guy friend. He is fun, sweet, trustworthy, and he also happens to be gay, which equals safe in her mind. Candace clings to Jase and leans on him for comfort and support when she starts to have night terrors and PTSD symptoms.
Candace is studying dance (ballet) at the University, and she is one of the best in her class. Her parents (complete douchenozzles!) don't think that dance is a respectable profession or the right career choice for her. Sadly, they never listen to her or support her to the detriment of their relationship. They feel she is an embarrassment the family name.
When Candace meets Ryan, because she was attacked, she doesn't trust him. She is afraid he will hurt her and so she tries to stay away from him. When they keep seeing each other, they chat a little more each time until Candace seems more comfortable around him. When Ryan first meets Candace he feels drawn to her and he stares...a lot! *Swoon* He knows she is afraid of him but he isn't sure why.
Ryan was so sweet with Candace. He was okay moving forward with their relationship at Candace's slow pace. Patient, sweet, successful, and hunky, what else could you want in a man? Ryan knows how Candace's relationship with Jase is and even though Jase is gay he isn't comfortable with how close they are. Ryan wants Candace to lean on him and come to him when she needs comforting but the only person that's ever been there for Candace is Jase and old habits die hard.
" "He's all I've ever had." Taking my hand in his, he places it
against his chest when he tells me, "You have me now too." "
I loved this book! It's funny at times but mostly it will rip your heart out and squeeze it as you feel Candace's pain. You hope so much that she will get the help she needs to overcome her fears and that justice will eventually be served. I loved the supporting characters as well. Jase, Mark, and of course Ryan. I love that Ryan's mother was so wonderful and was the mother figure that Candace always wanted and needed. As sad as this book is, it gives hope. Hope that you can overcome anything. It just takes time, love and support from friends and patience. I definitely recommend reading this book.
*NOTE*-
If you are suffering from PTSD for any reason, You've been attacked, beaten, raped, etc... there is help. Don't keep it to yourself. Let someone you trust know.

ALTERNATE POV
( Jase) Candace in the shower
When I unlock the door to my apartment, she doesn’t even speak as she heads straight to my bathroom and closes the door behind her. It feels like there are bricks in the pit of my stomach, and the past few hours are a complete haze. I hear the water to the shower turn on as I sit down on the couch. I wish I knew what to say, what to do, but I feel so helpless.
Laying my head back, I hear her start to cry. Dropping my head in my hands, I can’t stop my own tears from falling. Fuck. When her cries turn into screaming sobs, I bolt off the couch and run into the bathroom.
I see her through the steamed glass, on her knees, at the bottom of the shower. I feel like all the air is sucked out of my lungs. Seeing her like this is almost unbearable, so I quickly kick off my shoes and socks, open the shower door, and wrap my arms around her from behind as she breaks. I don’t know what else to do, so I just cover her bruised and cut body with mine.
I have no clue what the hell really happened, and knowing Candace, she will never say. He beat the shit out of her, that much is evident. Rage roils in my gut when I think about what he did to her. I know I have to keep my shit together though, ‘cause she’s going to need me.
Listening to her wails is excruciating. I love this girl more than anything and to see her in this much pain kills me. I’m so scared for her; I’m afraid of what this has done to her. I know there is nothing I could possibly say, so I just hold onto her as she falls apart in my arms.
